Producer Vipul Shah has announced that Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will be teaming up for the first time since Khakee for his new movie Action Replay. Set in the elegant world of 1950s Mumbai, it will give both actors the chance to shine in a period drama.

“Action Replay will combine a contemporary setting with a period look where Mumbai of the 1950s will be recreated,” said Vipul, “Nitin Desai will do the set design. He will replicate the time period by constructing roads, cars and houses over six acres of land in his Karjat studio.”

It’s been an up-and-down year for Akshay with the disastrous Tashan followed by the super-duper-mega-hit (that’s a technical term) Singh is Kinng! It also looks as though he has more hits lined up with Chandni Chowk to China with Deepika Padukone and Ranvir Shorey; Blue with Sanjay Dutt and Lara Dutta; and the US-based Kambakth Ishq with Kareena Kapoor, Amrita Arora, Denise Richards and Sylvester Stallone.

Aishwarya is currently in Peru filming for Enthiran with Rajnikanth, having just finished with the Unforgettable tour and The Pink Panther 2 with Steve Martin and John Cleese. Aishwarya is also reading a script that would pitch her alongside Will Smith. “There is the possibility of a movie with Will Smith and I am very excited about it because the script is fabulous and no doubt, he is a great actor and is a funny companion to work with,” she says.

Rai has been paid Rs 60 million for her role in Enthiram. This makes her the highest paid actress in Bollywood. The film stars celebrated South Indian actor Rajinikanth in the lead role.

Aishwarya has dominated Indian film industry like no other Bollywood actress after Sridevi. In fact with her glowing beauty and the prized Miss World award in her hand she became instantly famous and was always better paid than other actress of the same stature.

It was only later that the actress proved her caliber.But this news comes at a time when many people had written the obituary of her Bollywood career. It is more than a year since she married Abhishek Bachchan a fellow Bollywood actor and son of Amitabh Bachchan.

Most Indian actresses say goodbye to their film careers after they are married. But Aishwarya has not given up. It is notwithstanding the fact that she has not given any blockbuster after her marriage.

But it is to be noted that Aishwarya agreed to work in Enthiram out of the respect she has for Rajinikanth. Forced by busy schedules to turn down a role opposite Rajini thrice before, Aishwarya deemed it would be inappropriate to deny the stalwart’s offer anymore. That is the main reason she signed Enthiram even after her call sheet overflowed with dates allocated to Mani Ratnam’s bilingual.
